Aluminum sulfate (Al2​ (SO4​ )3​ ) has a wide range of applications due to its properties, particularly its ability to coagulate and flocculate. Here are its main areas of use:

1. Water and Wastewater Treatment:

   • This is one of the most common applications. Aluminum sulfate acts as a coagulant, helping small suspended particles in water clump together (flocculate) into larger flocs, which are then easier to remove through settling or filtration. This improves water clarity and removes impurities.

2. Paper Industry:

   • Used in paper manufacturing for paper sizing. This makes the paper resistant to absorbing inks and moisture. It also helps in retaining cellulose fibers and fillers, improving the paper's structure.

3. Textile Industry:

   • Applied as a mordant in dyeing fabrics. A mordant helps fix the dye to the fibers, making the coloration more durable.

4. In Agriculture (limited):

   • Can be used to acidify soil, especially for plants that prefer acidic conditions (e.g., hydrangeas, rhododendrons). However, other acidifiers are often used for this purpose.
   • Sometimes mentioned in the context of controlling certain pests or plant diseases, but this is a less common and specific application.

5. Other Applications:

   • In the production of foaming agents for firefighting.
   • In the food industry as a clarifying agent and stabilizer (E520), but on a smaller scale and adhering to strict regulations.
   • In the cosmetic industry and medicine as an astringent or a component of antiperspirants (historically, less common now).
   • In construction as an accelerator for concrete setting.

The most significant and large-scale application of aluminum sulfate is in water treatment.
